Navigating Postpartum: How Long Does Postpartum Recovery Really Take?

Welcoming a new life into the world is undoubtedly a miraculous and life-changing experience. However, the journey through postpartum is often more complex and lengthy than we might expect. Let’s dive into the realities of postpartum recovery and address the common concern many mums have: How long does it really take?

Postpartum Beyond the Six Weeks:

Contrary to common belief, postpartum does not neatly end at the six-week mark. The expectation that mothers should fully recover within this timeframe is a misconception. The physical and emotional adjustments can extend far beyond, and embracing this reality and understanding every mum has a unique journey,  is crucial for a healthier perspective.

Unpredictability of Postpartum:

Every birth experience is unique, and expecting the unexpected is part of the journey. From forceps and ventouse to episiotomy and c-sections, various elements are integral to the birthing process. It’s vital to be open to different birthing scenarios and remember that no matter how you birthed your baby, you have done your best and a birth that has not gone according to ‘plan’ is not your fault.

Acknowledging Your Effort:

Regardless of the birthing process, it’s essential to recognise the effort and commitment every mum puts into bringing a new life into the world. The concept of “failure to progress”in birth  can have a significant impact on a mum’s mental health, and we are here to help you recover not only from a physical point of view, but to also offer support and understanding, and resources to promote your well-being.

The Mummy MOT®

Postnatal Check-Up:

Understanding that mum’s body undergoes substantial changes, we offer the Mummy MOT®, which is designed to provide comprehensive postnatal care. This six-week and beyond check-up focuses on getting pelvic floor and abdominal muscles back in shape, facilitating a smoother return to full fitness. Every mum regardless of their baby’s age or birthing experience, is welcome.

Who Needs a Mummy MOT®?

Up to half of all women experience muscle weakness in the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy, and 1 in 12 women in the UK report symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse.  The Mummy MOT® is not limited to the early postpartum period; it’s recommended for women who gave birth years ago and still face issues such as a persistent tummy gap or related pelvic floor concerns.

Specialist Physiotherapy:

Conducted by fully trained and licensed practitioners, the 90-minute assessment covers a full postural screen, pelvic floor muscle evaluation, abdominal muscle examination, and screening for any bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction.

Empowering Postpartum Recovery:

In addition to the assessment, the Mummy MOT® offers education and advice on safe activities, a bespoke rehabilitation program tailored to individual goals, and a detailed report summarizing the findings of the assessment.

We do also offer a separate pelvic floor check if you feel that you don’t need a full MoT (60 minutes, £70)

At Resilience Physiotherapy for Pelvic Health we offer a variety of online programs designed to support your recovery. The courses include six hours of exercise and education that you can do from the comfort of your home.

Embracing the Journey

Postpartum recovery is a unique and individual experience for every mum. By understanding the realities, embracing the unpredictability, and seeking professional guidance, mums can navigate postpartum with resilience and empowerment. Remember, there’s no fixed timeline for recovery—each step forward is a victory in itself.

“I went to Tracey a couple of months after having my third child. I had a traumatic labour and was suffering from symptoms following this. I had seen a doctor, NHS physio and a different women’s health physio who had all told me that everything was ‘normal’ despite me telling them my symptoms were affecting my daily life.

When I first met Tracey straight away she put me at ease, she’s warm, kind and efficient. She listened to me and examined me (even making me laugh during the process). Honestly she was filled with reassurance that my symptoms would get better and that there were things we could do. She filled me with hope.

Every appointment I was at ease and felt valued and listened. Over a period of months I finally felt myself (if not better) and have been able to get back to exercise.

I now recommend ANY woman should go and see Tracey as everyone should have a woman’s MOT. Tracey has given me my life back and I could not be any more grateful. “ – Emma.
